Dear Philological Foundation,

On behalf of Torriano Junior School, I would like to thank you for your financial support which enable 54 of our year 5 pupils (including 20 FSM) to visit Juniper Hall, Surrey in April of this year. It is the second year we have run a successful year 5 residential, having previously visited Stratford upon Avon last year as part of our celebration of William Shakespeare’s 450th anniversary of his birth.

This year we visited Juniper Hall, as part of the geography curriculum, where we completed geographical fieldwork. Juniper Hall is an amazing location for fieldwork, set in a quiet wooded valley in an unspoilt area of the Chalk Downs on the edge of Box Hill, and we spent a wonderful 3 days studying the wildlife and the physical geography there.

Juniper Hill was such a great opportunity to see the countryside and have fun with our friends from school. My favourite part was when we set our small mammal traps and checked our findings in the morning. Roj 5VB

Juniper Hill was amazing. We climbed Box Hill and collected bits and pieces of nature along the way and enjoyed the fresh air of the countryside. I think it was a great experience for everybody and for some people it was their first time out of London. Lola 5MW

During the children’s time there they completed environment quality assessments: comparing different areas around Box Hill including Burford Spur, Visitor Centre, Tower and Happy Valley. The most popular activity was creating and checking small mammal traps, recording results and observing behavioural modifications. This was thrilling for children as many had not seen such animals in their natural habitat. The children also conducted sand tray experiments – looking at the effect of water on the land focusing on erosion and deposition. The children’s compass skills were put to the test to help discover a beautiful view for a landscape sketch and to find buried treasure.

Your support helps us to continue to make these important residential trips available to all children at the school and for this we are extremely grateful.

Yours sincerely,

Helen Bruckdorfer     Head of School
